Chris Steffens - Rainbow Swirl Marble #2
Chris makes marbles through a hybrid of centuries old Off Hand techniques combined with modern torchworking techniques. This choice informs the design which evolves over the course of several marbles. A “core” of colored glass is created with a polychromatic “Rainbow”. This core is encased in clear glass and twisted into an entertaining helix. Small portions are divided off the main design. These portions are shaped into about 80% of a finished marble. On a different day, these ‘Blanks’ are heated to 1000 degrees. Using flameworking techniques I finish each blank by hand, creating unique perfect glass spheres.
Chris Steffens started as a young glassblower in early 1990. Since then he has been a student at the Pilchuck School as well as an instructor at The Studio in Corning, NY. After spending years working with world renown glass artists, Chris now enjoys making his own work in his glass studio in Seattle, WA.
